Why Metabolic Balance® works - the science behind it

Most diets fail because they treat everyone the same. A plan that works brilliantly for your friend, your sister, or someone you follow online may do absolutely nothing for you - and that’s not a lack of willpower. That’s biology.

Think of it this way. You wouldn’t run a vehicle on the wrong fuel and wonder why it’s not performing. If your car needs 98 octane, putting 91 in the tank might get you moving - but it won’t give you the performance, efficiency, or longevity your engine is capable of. Your body works the same way. It has its own specific requirements, and when you’re not meeting them, everything suffers - your energy, your weight, your mood, your hormones.

It starts with a comprehensive blood analysis - examining up to 36 individual blood values - to understand exactly what your body needs at a biochemical level. Those results, combined with your health history and personal food preferences, are used to create a nutrition plan that is completely unique to you. Not a template. How does it work?

The programme follows a structured four-phase approach, with regular support and check-ins along the way.

Phase 1

Preparation (2 days)

A short preparation phase to gently ready your digestive system for the change ahead.

Phase 2

Strict conversion (minimum 14 days)

Your personalised food plan begins. This is where the real metabolic reset happens. The 8 Rules that underpin the programme come into full effect here, and your body begins to receive the precise nutrients it needs. This phase is the most structured, and it’s also where most people notice the most significant changes.

Phase 3

Relaxed conversion

Your plan gradually becomes more flexible as your body finds its new balance. Your food list expands, healthy fats are reintroduced, and you begin to explore what works for you long term - all while keeping the core principles in place.

Phase 4

Maintenance

Long-term strategies to sustain your results and make this a way of life. By this stage, the principles have become second nature, and you have the knowledge and confidence to maintain your results without rigid restriction.

What does the programme actually look like?

Once your blood results are back and your plan has been created, you’ll receive a comprehensive, personalised document that becomes your roadmap for the programme. Here’s what’s inside:

Your personalised food list

This is the heart of the programme. Based on your individual blood values, you receive a specific list of real, whole foods - proteins, vegetables, salads, fruits, and carbohydrates - that are the best match for your body’s chemistry. No two plans are the same. The foods on your list have been selected because they contain the precise nutrients your body needs to reset and rebalance.

Your meal plan

You’ll have three suggested meal combinations for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with specific portion guidance for each. The plan is structured but flexible - you can swap lunch and dinner suggestions to suit your day, and as you move through the phases, you’ll have increasing freedom with your choices.

The 8 Rules

The programme is built around eight core principles that guide how and when you eat - things like eating three meals a day with a five-hour gap between them, always starting your meal with a bite of protein, and drinking enough water for your body weight. These rules aren’t arbitrary - each one has a specific metabolic purpose, and your body adapts quickly to working with them.

Progress Tracking and Ongoing Support

The programme includes daily and weekly progress tracking — monitoring not just weight, but energy, sleep, digestion, skin, joint pain, and general wellbeing. This gives us a complete picture of how your body is responding, and means we can adjust and support you throughout. You won’t be handed a plan and left to figure it out alone. Throughout all four phases, we have regular check-in consultations — available both in-person in Whangarei and online from anywhere in New Zealand — to review your progress, answer your questions, and make any adjustments needed.

A note on blood testing

The comprehensive blood analysis is an essential first step in creating your plan, but is not included in the programme cost. You have two options: ask your GP to order the required tests, or I can arrange private testing through Awanui Labs at an additional cost - available nationwide across New Zealand.
