Inflammation: Your Body’s Inner Drama Queen

You’ve probably heard the word “inflammation” thrown around a lot lately, on health podcasts, in magazine articles, maybe even on the back of a turmeric supplement promising to fix your entire personality. But what actually is it? Is it always bad? And why does it seem to be linked to... well, everything? Grab a cuppa. Let’s break it down.

What Is Inflammation?

Think of inflammation as your body’s very own emergency response team.[1] The moment something goes wrong, a cut, an infection, a splinter, or a rogue bacterium, your immune system sends out the alarm, and immune cells rush to the scene, fashionably on time for once.

This response is called acute inflammation, and it’s genuinely brilliant.[2] It eliminates whatever is causing harm, clears the wreckage, and starts the healing process.[3] Without it, a simple paper cut could become life-threatening. Frankly, inflammation deserves better PR.

The problem? Like any good drama queen, it doesn’t always know when to stop.

What’s Actually Happening Inside Your Body?

When your body detects a threat, it triggers a cascade of chemical signals.[4] Here’s the simplified version:

  • Alarm bells ring - damaged or infected cells release chemical signals, essentially texting the immune system “HELP NOW,” all caps, no punctuation, pure panic.[5]
  • Blood vessels widen - more blood rushes to the area (hello, redness and heat).[1]
  • The immune army arrives - neutrophils act as rapid response, macrophages as the clean-up crew, the ones who show up after with rubbish bags and no small talk.[6]
  • The battle begins - immune cells destroy invaders, releasing cytokines to coordinate the response.[5]
  • Resolution - ideally, once the threat is gone, inflammation switches off and healing begins.[7]

It’s also why a swollen ankle after a twist looks so dramatic, your body is literally staging a rescue mission in there, complete with sirens, backup, and absolutely no regard for how it looks in sandals.

The Classic Signs of Inflammation

The physician Celsus described four of them around the 1st century AD: redness, heat, swelling, and pain.[5] A fifth, loss of function, was added later, most often credited to Galen. Together, they’re still the framework doctors use today:

  • Redness and heat - increased blood flow to the area
  • Swelling - fluid accumulates as immune cells arrive
  • Pain - chemical signals irritate nerve endings - your nerves filing a formal complaint and demanding you stop whatever you're doing.
  • Loss of function - your body’s version of a “closed for repairs” sign, and frankly, fair enough

These are easy to spot on the surface, a bee sting, a sprained knee. Internally, inflammation feels different: fatigue, brain fog, general unwellness, or just... feeling off.[2]

Acute vs. Chronic: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

The Good: Acute Inflammation

Short, sharp, purposeful. Acute inflammation typically lasts a few days and does its job before packing up and leaving.[6] Annoying in the moment, your best friend in the long run.

The Bad: Chronic Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is what happens when the immune response refuses to stand down, sometimes for months or years.[6] It can be triggered by persistent infections, autoimmune conditions, environmental exposures, or lifestyle factors like poor diet, chronic stress, lack of sleep, excess weight, and smoking.[2] The sneaky part is that it often has no obvious symptoms, you might just feel tired, achy, or generally run-down while it quietly does damage in the background.[3]

How Do You Know If You Have Chronic Inflammation?

Often, you don’t, not without looking. Chronic inflammation rarely announces itself the way acute inflammation does, no big entrance. Patterns worth paying attention to include ongoing fatigue that rest doesn’t fix, persistent aches with no obvious injury, brain fog, digestive changes, frequent minor infections, unexplained skin issues, and low mood with no clear cause. None of these prove chronic inflammation on their own, which is why guessing isn't a great strategy, you'll just end up diagnosing yourself with everything on the internet by dinner time.

The more reliable route is blood testing: C-reactive protein (CRP, or hs-CRP for this kind of low-grade inflammation) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR).[10] Standard labs flag under 1 mg/L as “low risk” for CRP, 1-3 mg/L as moderate, and above 3 mg/L as high.[11] From a naturopathic perspective, though, “not at risk” and “optimal” aren’t the same thing, much like “not on fire” and “running efficiently” aren’t the same thing for an engine. The real goal is as close to zero as your body genuinely allows, since even low-grade inflammation sitting in that 1-3 range for years is still your immune system running warmer than it should. Neither test tells you exactly what’s causing the inflammation, they’re a smoke alarm, not a map of the fire, but paired with a proper conversation about symptoms and history, they’re how a practitioner builds a picture worth acting on.

The Conditions Linked to Chronic Inflammation

Chronic, low-grade inflammation has been linked to a remarkably long list of serious conditions, so long that scientists now consider it a major driver of modern disease.[2]

  • Heart Disease - inflammation drives atherosclerosis, the plaque buildup in artery walls behind heart attack and stroke, less a smooth motorway, more a wall covered in double-sided tape[3]
  • Type 2 Diabetes - inflammatory signals from abdominal fat disrupt how cells respond to insulin[4,2]
  • Inflammatory Arthritis - conditions like rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis are driven entirely by immune dysfunction attacking the joints[8]
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease - Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis affect more than 20,000 New Zealanders[9]
  • Neurological and Mental Health Conditions - linked to depression, anxiety, and neurodegenerative disease, which may explain the brain fog and low mood that often come with it[2]
  • Cancer - long-term inflammation is now recognised as a contributing factor in certain cancers[2]
  • Autoimmune Conditions - chronic immune over-activation can turn on the body’s own healthy tissue, as in lupus, MS, psoriasis and Hashimoto’s[6]

What Does Conventional Medicine Offer?

It’s worth knowing what’s actually available on the pharmaceutical side, since medication has a real place here, particularly for autoimmune and inflammatory arthritis conditions where the immune system needs more than a better breakfast.

  • NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen, and similar) reduce pain and inflammation quickly, but long-term use carries real, well-documented risks: stomach irritation and ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, and increased cardiovascular and kidney risk
  • Corticosteroids (like prednisone) suppress inflammation more powerfully, at the cost of weight gain, elevated blood sugar, bone density loss, mood changes, and a weakened immune response with longer-term use
  • Biologics and DMARDs used for autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis work differently again, they target specific immune pathways and can genuinely slow disease progression rather than just masking symptoms, though they carry their own infection and monitoring requirements

That last point matters for the “root cause versus symptoms” conversation people often want to have: it’s fair for NSAIDs and short-term corticosteroid use, which manage the symptom without addressing what’s driving it. It’s less fair applied to biologics and DMARDs, which do modify the underlying immune process for autoimmune disease, that’s literally their job. Lumping every pharmaceutical option into one “just masks it” basket isn’t accurate.

There’s also a genuinely interesting finding worth knowing rather than a vague warning: a 2022 study out of McGill found that suppressing acute inflammation with NSAIDs or steroids early actually predicted longer pain duration, both in mice and in an analysis of half a million people, compared with those who didn’t take anti-inflammatories for their acute pain.[15] The theory is that acute inflammation, specifically the neutrophils involved in it, plays a real role in fully resolving pain, and blocking that process too early may interfere with it. It’s one study, not the final word, but it’s a genuinely evidence-based reason to think carefully about reaching for anti-inflammatories reflexively for every ache, rather than a reason to fear them outright.

Why Does Any of This Matter?

Inflammation isn’t just a word on a supplement label; it’s a fundamental biological process behind how we feel and how we age. Diet, movement, sleep, stress, gut health, and environmental exposures all play a role in turning it up or down.[3] Understanding it is the first step. Knowing what drives it, and what calms it, is where the real conversation begins.

A Word on “Inflammaging”

Worth knowing if you’re thinking long-term: inflammaging, first coined in 2000 (someone in a lab clearly had fun naming that one), describes the low-grade, chronic inflammation that creeps upward with age, even without any obvious infection.[12] It’s considered a major driver of what we casually write off as “normal ageing”, joint stiffness, slower recovery, foggier thinking, rising cardiovascular and metabolic risk, caused partly by a build-up of senescent cells (old cells that linger, releasing inflammatory chemicals, the biological equivalent of a colleague who’s retired but still shows up to meetings) and partly by the same lifestyle factors covered in this post, compounding quietly over decades.[12] Unfortunately, ageing itself isn’t optional. How much low-grade inflammation accompanies it is something you have real influence over.

What’s Actually Fuelling Chronic Inflammation?

Modern life is remarkably good at keeping inflammation switched on. It’s rarely one big thing, usually a slow accumulation of everyday habits.

  • Ultra-processed food - diets high in refined sugar and processed foods are consistently linked to higher inflammatory markers. Saturated fats trigger inflammatory pathways, while omega-3s from fish reduce those same signals
  • Chronic stress - your body's threat detector doesn't come with a setting for "mildly annoying" versus "life-threatening." Short-term stress hormones are helpful, however chronic activation keeps the immune system switched on. And if you’re now stressed about being inflamed, that’s also inflammatory. I know. It's a terrible system.
  • Poor sleep - your body does its repair work while you sleep. Short-change it and inflammation ticks upward, which in turn disrupts sleep further, It's the kind of vicious cycle that your body has never once apologised for.
  • Physical inactivity - a sedentary lifestyle is independently linked to higher chronic inflammation, separate from weight or diet
  • Excess abdominal fat - not inert padding, it actively releases inflammatory cytokines, it has opinions, and it is not shy about sharing them
  • Alcohol and smoking - both promote inflammation through multiple pathways; smoking is one of the most potent and most modifiable drivers, no spice rack required to fix that one
  • Gut health - a disrupted microbiome can increase intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”), letting inflammatory compounds trigger immune responses body-wide
  • Environmental exposures - air pollution, household chemicals, and endocrine-disrupting compounds found in some plastics and personal care products (BPA and phthalates among them) have both been linked to raised inflammatory markers, not just a vague background hum but a measurable, cumulative load[16]

So, What Actually Calms Inflammation?

Good news: the same levers that crank inflammation up can, when adjusted, bring it back down.

1. Eat for Your Body, Not Just the General Guidelines

Two people can eat identical diets and have completely different inflammatory responses, because their blood chemistry, metabolism, and gut microbiome are unique to them. A large postprandial study tracking over a thousand people found substantial individual variation in inflammatory markers after identical meals, driven by gut microbial composition and existing metabolic health, not just what was on the plate.[13]

  • Turmeric (curcumin) reduces inflammatory markers, though on its own the body absorbs very little of it, pairing it with black pepper dramatically improves how much actually gets into your system
  • Ginger - anti-inflammatory, particularly for joint-related inflammation
  • Garlic, cinnamon, rosemary, cloves, and cayenne all carry evidence for calming inflammatory signalling and supporting antioxidant status, with cinnamon offering a useful blood-sugar benefit alongside, and garlic offering the added benefit of keeping vampires away

Foods to limit: refined sugars and sugary drinks, ultra-processed snacks, excess red or processed meat, deep-fried foods, and excess alcohol.

2. Move Your Body, Regularly, Not Heroically

You don’t need to train for an Ironman. Regular, moderate activity promotes an anti-inflammatory state, reduces cortisol, and improves insulin sensitivity. A 45-minute walk most days does more for inflammation than one gruelling Saturday at the gym followed by five days on the couch.

3. Take Stress Seriously

Chronic stress maintains a state of immune over-activation. Evidence-supported approaches include mindfulness and meditation (even 10 minutes a day measurably affects cortisol), yoga and tai chi, slow diaphragmatic breathwork, social connection, and time in nature.

4. Protect Your Sleep

Sleep is when your body does the bulk of its repair and immune regulation. Aim for 7-9 hours: consistent sleep and wake times, limited screens before bed, a cool dark room, and no large meals, alcohol, or caffeine close to bedtime.

5. Address the Big Modifiable Factors

  • Quit smoking - one of the single most powerful anti-inflammatory actions you can take
  • Reduce alcohol, particularly heavy or regular drinking
  • Manage weight, even modest reductions in abdominal fat meaningfully lower inflammatory markers
  • Care for your gut - fibre, fermented foods, fewer ultra-processed foods, and consider whether a probiotic is appropriate for you

The Big Picture: It’s Not About Perfection

If you’re now anxiously cataloguing your fridge, take a breath - a deep diaphragmatic breath. The turmeric can wait. The research is clear: it’s your overall pattern that matters, not any single food or habit. This is really the whole naturopathic philosophy in one sentence: rather than waiting for inflammation to become a diagnosis and reaching for something to suppress it, the aim is to understand what’s driving it and address that, at whatever level it’s sitting.
